The meaning of Butokukan

What does « BUTOKUKAN » mean ?

The name « BUTOKUKAN » has three Kanji.

  • « BU » refers to the traditional martial arts of BUDO,
  • « TOKU »refers to the MARTIAL VALUES such as Respect, Courage, Honesty, Humility, Friendship, Tolerance, Politeness,… The apprentice of these VALUES through trainings makes us  ALL stronger and better persons!
  • « KAN » refers to the DOJO or gym where the trainings take place.

Butokukan Herstal is an Iaido dojo in Herstal, Lierge, with the technical collaboration with Butokukan Kendo & Iaido dojo Bruxelles.

Iaido

Iaido is a martial art without violence, without sudden falls, without painful holds, requiring concentration, self-control, long patience, hard effort, and perseverance.

It is a discipline within the reach of everyone regardless of age.

Iaido is the practice of the katana (Japanese sword). It is one of the only martial arts that has its origins in samurai sword training.

The iaido promotes spiritual and moral development and literally translates as “the way of the union of beings”.
